A Letter to the Woman Struggling to Believe Her Body Is Unconditionally Good // Shelby Hirschman
The holidays are packed with conversations and emotions around the topic of food and our bodies. We critique ourselves in the mirror as we’re getting ready for that work party, we make New Year’s Resolutions to work out three times a week at least, compare our bodies to the women we see at Christmas Mass, and we may even hear comments, intentional or unintentional from family members about how we look or the weight we’ve gained or lost.
In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Shelby Hirschman.
Shelby is a wife, mom, and registered dietitian. She’s also the owner and founder of Good Body Nutrition, LLC—a nutrition counseling company that strives to help women restore relationships with their food, body, and soul.
I think that our relationships with our bodies and our relationship with food as women is the perfect topic to dive into right in the middle of the holiday season - but I honestly could have released this episode anytime, because I think the struggle of body image and nourishing our bodies is a topic we could talk about as women any time of the year. After all, approximately 91% of us are unhappy with our bodies and resort to dieting to achieve our “ideal” body shape.
If you look at your reflection in the mirror and the first thoughts that come to mind are what you would change about yourself, sister, this letter is for you.
Topics we talked about in this episode:
Why we struggle as women to believe God when he says that he created our bodies and calls them good
How to find healing in our lives as women when it comes to body image
Why should we let the scale go, and some things we can do as women that can help us be more in tune with our bodies in healthy ways
How to be intentional as parents about fostering healthy relationships with food in our families
Whether body neutrality is a healthy approach to body image for Catholic women
What to look for when you turn to a professional for help healing from body image wounds and creating a healthy relationship with food
